Hotel RŪDNINKŲ VARTAI is situated in a genuinely historic place. During 1503-1522 Rūdninkų gate and the city‘s defensive wall were built in the same place. Inside the hotel and in its courtyard you can see one of the remaining sections of this defensive wall.

In the beginning of the 16th century attacks of the Tartars on the Lithuanian lands intensified significantly, also, relations with Grand Duke of Moscow deteriorated. In the face of these circumstances Lithuanian Grand Duke Alexander issued an order on the 6th of September 1503 to built a defensive wall around the city of Vilnius. The wall system was finished in 1522.
When the work was completed, city‘s defensive wall embodied closed stonework ring around the city of Vilnius, and Rūdninkų gate was a part of it. This gate was one of the strongest fortification elements of the town – it was a powerful defence construction comparable with a castle.
Rūdninkų gate also served like an official entrance of the city. All noble guests – kings, bishops and landlords of Vilnius area - arrived to Vilnius through these gates. The gate was very richly decorated and the guests were ingeniously and theatrically welcomed. The arriving monarch was met grandly near Rudininku gate and led to the castle under a golden canopy.
The importance of Rūdninkų gate decreased after some time. The last time this gate was used for a defence is in 1794 and in 1800 they were demolished.
